Note the variety of hat styles in this study of the faces and costumes of a group of young women. This photo was taken shortly after Scheuer’s arrival in France.

Throughout his 1934 trip, Scheuer photographed people doing their jobs. Workers and machinery carry equal weight in this picture, which was made in a dimly lit environment.

In the first of three pictures in this location, Scheuer captures clusters of cattlemen interacting casually in a variety of postures.

‍

The relaxed but self-assured cattleman in the center looks at the photographer. The gesture of his left arm sets off an undulating wave pattern, extending through the horns of the steers, and is set against the stark black rectangular openings of the building in the rear.

‍

There is ample space around the three central figures. The V-shape of the two staffs ignites the visual energy of this picture. Three young cattlemen, wearing berets typical of the Basque region, stare directly at the photographer, one smiling, the other two eying him coolly.

Here, a young butcher presents himself along with his stock, looking confidently at the photographer. Due to negative damage, this is one of the few cropped pictures presented here.

Scheuer was interested not only in how the local people looked, but in what they did. Here, a cheesemonger in the French Basque region carefully arranges her merchandise

Scheuer was keenly interested in architecture. The inscription in bas relief appears to say “AÑO 1019,” making this doorway over 900 years old. The old man and young woman add a contemporary human touch.

This unknown location is somewhere between Carcassonne, France and Genoa, Italy.

‍

In the background, two old men repair fishing nets, with a small cask of wine between them. In the foreground, a young man appears to be threshing something.

Note the outstretched nets drying in the background, and the bottle of chianti next to the chair.

As he boards the train from Milan to Venice, Scheuer pivots on the train step and captures this view of beams of sunlight pouring through the iron arches of this magnificent train shed, which looks today much as it did in 1934.

This oarsman propels his gondola with muscle power, while the masts of sailboats are seen in the background.

‍

A fruit vendor in a small boat uses a basket on a boom to complete a sale to ferry passengers above.

‍

The young girl in the striped dress is one of Scheuer’s traveling companions. She and her family have not yet been identified.

‍

This is probably a family home which Scheuer visited near the end of his journey. The girl and the woman who is serving food here, presumably her mother, appear throughout the trip. Note the 78 rpm phonograph records and player on the chair in the lower right.
